Cupcakes!

I'm kind of obsessed with the whole cupcake craze that's going on a the moment.  I just love them.  How could you not love a little cake thats just for you and no-one else.  Plus they dont take as long to bake, make and decorate!

Yesterday (26th March 2011) I attended one of my many cupcake decorating classes.  Run by a fabulous woman whom I haven't got to know quite well enough to know her name but she runs her classes pretty much every Saturday at The Homestore in Milford.  She runs them mostly to share her passion as I can't see how they make any money out of it besides getting people into their store on a regular basis.  Classes are only $10 each time but not only that you get your money back in a voucher you can spend in the store.  What a great marketing concept as you can just about guarantee that you will spend over that each time.

I believe she gets most of her inspiration from the books 'Hello Cupcake' and 'What's new Cupcake' by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson.  I have the copy of 'What's new Cupcake' and I just love it!

Yesterday we learnt how to do sunflowers!  I dragged my work friend and her daughter along as they both seemed to have an interest in baking interesting things.  They really enjoyed the class, bought all the supplies and decided to go home and carry on the fun!

Here is the sample version the teacher had made before we started.

First we had to cover the cupcake with green buttercream, then for some height added broken pieces of oreo to each side of the cupcake and cover again with green buttercream.  After that put one large and one small oreo on the bumps you have created.

After that get your orange and yellow buttercream and put on each side of the piping back in order to create multicoloured petals.  This is my work colleague Dianne and her daughter Hudson having a go.

The basic instructions are to hold the nozzle so that the biscuit is in the groove, apply pressure and hold there, then stop the pressure and pull out. Here is my cupcake after I finished the petals.

Use the same but larger sized tip for the green leaves.  Here are Dianne and Hudson having a go:

For some gorgeous finishing touches add a mini red M&M and decorate as a ladybird, and add some glitter for extra sparkle!  My finished cupcake - looks just like the teachers, yes?!
